There’s an old saying that people are consistent.

One of the main reasons that The New Agenda spoke out in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and Politico against Summers as a candidate for Treasury Secretary was because we strongly suspected that his long history of not being able to work with women would follow him to the White House.

Lo and behold, this week, White House Cybersecurity Chief, Melissa Hathaway resigned.  The White House tapped Ms. Hathaway, a senior intelligence official who had launched President George W. Bush’s cybersecurity initiative.

Melissa Hathaway

The Wall Street Journal reports:

People familiar with the matter said Ms. Hathaway has been “spinning her wheels” in the White House, where the president’s economic advisers sought to marginalize her politically.

Hmmm….economic adviser…marginalize….wonder who that could be:

National Economic Adviser Larry Summers argued forcefully that his team should have a say in the work of the new cyber official.

The result was a cybersecurity official who would report both to the National Security Council and the National Economic Council.

Report to both the National Security Council AND the National Economic Council?:

“It’s almost like the system has become paralyzed,” said Tom Kellermann, a former World Bank cybersecurity official who served on a commission whose work influenced the White House’s cyber planning.

While we are discussing Larry Summers, hat tip to S H Mills who forwarded yet another story about a woman that Summers chased out, Iris Mack in Barron’s. For those of you that are not familiar with Iris Mack, she spoke out about issues at Harvard’s endowment and Summers proceeded to chase her out of town.  Here’s a quick summary:

Iris Mack, a derivatives researcher, sought a quieter life. Mack joined Harvard Management Co., a privatized company which managed the university’s endowment fund in 2002. To her surprise, she found the Harvard endowment fund was not so staid. In fact, it was involved in the same speculative trading as her former employer, Enron. Worse, after she spoke up about it to Harvard President Larry Summers’ chief of staff, Marne Levine, she was fired four months later for raising the subject. No academic freedom in finance, I guess.

Mack eventually sued (and won out of court) saying she was “shocked at the inexperience of her co-workers,” some not even licensed securities dealers. “The group I was working for had no background whatsoever to be working on [complex derivatives trades],” she told the Harvard Crimson. Traders were also using discredited variants of Black-Scholes statistical modeling, now acknowledged as having been at the heart of the 1998 collapse of Long Term Capital Management.

Larry Summers, you go boy?

I really wish we could do something about it! Although the assumption is he’s chasing these people out because they are women, I’d like to know if he ever chases men out, and in what circumstances?

Off subject question, does anyone else think that the press is downplaying the story about the mass shooting of women in a gym yesterday?

    PS – Summers just sucks.

I don’t know about that? I watch Fox and they were all over. Saying how that dude hated women and that is why he did this, etc..

Thanks Puma for Life – it’s the Palin bashing syndrome continuing.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Kathleen or Joan would go on that show and speak about sexism – nah, we don’t have any of that!

    Amy,

Sorry, I do not have a link. I heard a 10 – 15 second mention on NPR yesterday and saw a ticker on CNN late in the day is all. Thought I would see an article in either the NYT or WP this morning, nothing there when I scanned the web this morning. Apparently FOX news is carrying the story, I do not watch FOX news.

Here is the link to Fox News on the killing spree that killed 3 women and left 9 other wounded. I thought everybody was covering this. Foxs had on all over their news coverage yesterday and I think just about everybody covered in their like O’Reilley, Hannity, Greta, etc…
They are also releasing updates on this guy, including diaries and blog posts where he states how much he hates women.
That is really curious that no other station was really covering it!?!

Wow! Summers – never liked him! A woman should have that job!

Wow! While Palin didn’t have a favorable affirmative action record, it is wrong and a big stretch to say she is the “dog whistle” for intolerance.

Wow! What you all may be missing, however, is that the specter of Obama being the “other” was raised by the McCain/Palin campaign and the hate unleashed during the campaign season is growing on all accounts.

These are exciting and dangerous times. Exciting because we had an African American male and two majority women campaigning for the White House. Also dangerous times because the emergence of these three people has revived the overt and covert sexism and racism that exists in America.

While I try to restrict my comments within the TNA web site to promoting my first passion – women’s rights, in response to some comments, I feel obligated to say the Birther crowds and the fact a majority of Republicans and Southerners either believe President Obama wasn’t born in the United States, or aren’t sure scares and shames me about this country.

    LVL,
This site should be utilized for everyone’s passion concerning Women’s rights and the advancement of those rights.
But as a Southerner I will totally DISAGREE with your statement on the whole “Birther” issue. And although I am not a republican I disagree with that as well. I am on several other sites and there are people from ALL over the country that subscribe to the “Birther” idea as well as few Republicans and even disenfranchised Democrats that subscribe to the notion. And I do not think it is fair by any means, that the media has portrayed a false idea the ALL Southerners and Republicans believe this.Because it is simply NOT true.
The fact is we need to just put our politic ideology aside here for a second to be all inclusive to everyone. And that goes for everyone on the right that continues to throw in jabs about Obama and his supporters as well.It is extremely counterproductive to our goals.
I am a Libertarian,a minority and a very proud Southern Texas woman. And no I am not a “Birther”.

Back to the story. from my understanding hathaway is more then qualified to handle the task at hand. Which means only one of two things…1) She was chased out through bully tactis because of her gender
    or
    2) She disagreed on the issues and there fore became a target of office “politics”..excuse to pun.
from my years of experience in field work with good ol boys you can earn their respect by proving you can work just as hard as them w/no complaints. And on the other my own recent experience with these supposed Ivy league boys it’s either you submit to their club rulz or your gone, especially if you are a woman.

    Jessica,

You are ascribing a lot of positions and statements towards me that I did not make. With respect to the Republican, Birther and Southern comment, I was just referring to a poll(s) references in many, many sources.

And your statement ” I am on several other sites and there are people from ALL over the country that subscribe to the “Birther” idea as well as few Republicans and even disenfranchised Democrats that subscribe to the notion” makes me even more nervous for this country.

I consider myself a moderate and independent voter and my voting record reflects that position.

I fully agree with your statement “the fact is we need to just put our politic ideology aside here for a second to be all inclusive to everyone.”

Yes I do think the President and the Corporate media are downplaying the story of the mass murder of women at a gym. But wasn’t Michelle Obama making the best dressed list the “women’s story ” of the day from the Obamaites on the day the massacre took place? Really we wouldn’t want to bounce almost Presidential fashion news for murdered women and a discussion of whether the contempt heaped on female candidates last year by the Democrat party has led to a feeling among some males that it is OK to shoot bitchy cunts if your life isn’t going right. That wouldn’t do!

LVJ, please do not rant about the birthers here. The Democratic party has its partisan subgroup conspiracy theories just like any other major group. Do you have a LiveJournal? I do all my ranting there that is not appropriate for TNA.

    Karen,

Rant: a rant or harangue is a speech or text that does not present a well-researched and calm argument; rather, it is typically an attack on an idea, a person or an institution, and very often lacks proven claims. Such attacks are usually personal attacks.

I will reflect on your characterization of my comments and our suggestion of visiting LiveJournal.

I hope your tone will be same when others, as you say, “rant.” As an African American women, I may have a different perspective than some others. I hope they respect mine as I respect theirs.

I will move on to the next topic.

Bes although I do totally agree with.
i just want to make it clear that I am not looking to trash on you or anuthing. And I know you are using the ….umm words “b*tch” & “c@nt” as like in a third person sense I guess.
But I really feel that even in using those words in that way is still…..well just gross. I just think that as we repeat these words it brings us down to their level.
And “their” I mean women haters.
I really feel you make a great point on the issue of the media ignoring such a hate crime for something frivolous in comparison to the tragedy.
I think that would be a great blog.Media ignoring women’s rights or the things that happen to us.

I just think the use of those wordswere unnecessary.

    Have a great evening,
    Jessica

Hathaway is widely considered one of the top experts in the cybersecurity field – the WH should have done anything to keep her and make her useful. It’s really the country’s loss.

Hasn’t Summers does enough damage in 2 administrations by now?
