You say “fat chick?” I say “WTF?”

Many have forwarded me opinion pieces discussing Dr. Regina Benjamin’s weight. I found myself saying out loud “You’ve got to be kidding me! WTF?”
Is this a gender issue? Well, I think it is because the appearance of women is always discussed despite its irrelevance. Call me cynical, but I have a really hard time believing that the people discussing this are genuinely concerned that the Nation’s heath will be detrimentally impacted because Obama appointed a “fat chick” to be surgeon general.
Whether it is an excuse to trash a woman, or — for extra points — trash Obama too, or just EXTREME shallowness, I’m asking all opinion writers not to legitimize such “discussion” with analysis. Either ignore it or call it out for what it is.
Stop the shallowness and focus on the good stuff!
I would like to personally thank President Obama for appointing the phenomenal Dr. Benjamin. In addition to receiving a “genius award” from the MacArthur Foundation, she was the first physician under age 40 and the first African-American woman elected to the American Medical Association’s board of trustees. The MacArthur Foundation describes her as “a rural family physician forging an inspiring model of compassionate and effective medical care in one of the most underserved regions of the United States.”
Based on everything I’ve read about Dr. Benjamin, my feeling is that she is a brilliant doctor and a good person, the kind of person I want leading the charge on our Nation’s health.

i read this as ‘fat cheeek’ not ‘fat chick’
a little confusing.
we might make fat chic however.
I am not an Obama supporter but I do like this woman.
I am sick of the word fat it is often used to malign others.
Last year I weighed 290 lbs on a 5 foot 4 inch frame. I have lost 100 lbs and am no longer morbidally obese.
Dr. Benjamin is not “fat.” From her appearance in this photo, she is large busted and somewhat disproportionately tiny wasted. Geesh. I am behind this appointment from what I know so far. A family doc from the south is just waht we need as Surgeon General. I hope she comes out in favor of midwifery!
