The New Agenda applauds President Obama’s nomination of the country’s second female Surgeon General. Dr. Regina Benjamin is a rural Alabama family physician who made headlines with fierce determination to rebuild her nonprofit medical clinic in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
President Obama said of Dr. Benjamin:
When people couldn’t pay, she didn’t charge them. When the clinic wasn’t making money, she didn’t take a salary for herself.
Here’s the acceptance speech given by Dr. Benjamin earlier today:

Great news for women and girls. The second women ever to be the chief doctor in the country, a profession most people associate with men. Congrats to Benjamin, Obama and the country.
I can only imagine how happy she is.
I’m really liking this choice. Obama doesn’t have the best track record with his nominations, but this is a home run.
From what I’ve read about her, she seems to have all the qualities to make the best Surgeon General in recent memory.
She sounds like a great choice, but she’d be the third woman Surgeon General, not the second. Antonia Novello and Joycelyn Elders precede her.
