TAKE ACTION: Sexism Sells, but We’re Not Buying it!!!
Thanks to JBritto and our commenting community for alerting us to the outrageous misogyny comedians have been spewing about Sarah Palin. Here are the relevant segments.
First, from David Letterman’s Top Ten List of Highlights of Sarah Palin’s Trip to New York:
2) Bought make-up at Bloomingdale’s to Update her “Slutty Flight Attendant” Look.
Hillbuzz says, “Great Merciful Zeus, you will not get away with calling a sitting Governor a slutty flight attendant.”
But it gets worse. Stray Yellar Dawg’s headline reads “David Letterman Jumps the Misogyny Shark, Promotes Rape of a Minor,” referring …

Sexism Against Conservative Women is Still Sexism!
(Cross posted at The Huffington Post.)
When is sexism acceptable? The answer should be never. Yet for many feminists in our country, only certain types of women have been worth defending. When a conservative woman is the target of an attack, many so-called feminists stay silent. This “selective sexism”, or speaking out against sexism on a case by case basis, does not advance our national dialogue on women’s issues. Rather, selective sexism allows a dangerous level of permissible sexism to live and breed in our country. The only …

If you Encourage Sexism, are you Sexist?
Hat tip: Bruce Nahin
Huffington Post ran this headline, “Sarah Palin’s Toenails: What’s Painted On Them?” along with these pictures of Governor Palin’s foot, taken during her recent participation in an Autism walk. Anya Strzemein’s “article” contains no discussion of Autism or charity work. Just one sentence identifying the foot in the photos and one sentence encouraging readers to “tell us what you think.” And, oh yes, there’s a poll allowing readers to vote on what they think is decorating Palin’s toenails.
We’ve said many times that focus on a woman’s body parts instead of …

New Research: Math Gender Gap is Cultural, Not Biological
Are the dots on this graph evenly spread out? Nope. They kinda cluster along a line that starts in the lower left and goes to the upper right. That’s one of the reasons why researchers Janet Hyde and Janet Mertz of the University of Wisconsin concluded in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that:
… gender inequality… is the primary reason fewer females than males are identified as excelling in mathematics at the highest levels in most countries.

NY State Republicans – why would you want this scumbag?
Hiram Monserrate: Poster Boy of Violence Against Women
We’ve just learned that NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate is one of two Democratic State Senators to switch parties this morning, now giving the Republicans control of the New York State Senate by a 32-30 count.
The New York Times is reporting:
It was a noisy and acrimonious scene on the floor of the Senate as Senator Thomas W. Libous, a Republican from Binghamton and the party’s deputy leader, shouted for a roll-call vote, while Democrats attempted to stall the vote by asking to …

Hey Congress, Tell us Where we can Find Child Care for $3,000 a Year?
This is an excerpt from an essay originally posted on MomsRising.org. The author’s opinions are her own, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I know that tax season is over, but I’m still riled up. Every time I get to that section of my taxes where they ask you to report your child care expenses to a maximum (maximum!) of $3,000 for one child, my blood boils.
Where the heck are you going to find full-time quality child care for just $3000 per year!?
The truth is that in most communities, the …

15 year-old gang raped in FL…5 men go free
We’ve just been informed of a horrific case. A 15 year-old woman who was gang raped by five men. While these scumbags were attacking her, they also thought it would be fun to capture the attack on film, so they took digital photos. This poor girl, like most victims of rape, did not want to press charges, so the police are dropping the case!
Read from the local CBS affiliate:
The Broward State Attorney’s Office has decided not to file criminal charges against two of the men accused of participating in the …

Geena Davis: At this Pace,
Expect Gender Parity in 500 Years
This piece originally was posted on the author’s blog, Tennessee Guerilla Women. The author’s opinions are her own, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I’ve been crazy about Geena Davis ever since Thelma and Louise. In the clip below, Geena Davis — founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media – tells graduates at Bates College that if we continue at the current pace, we’ll achieve gender parity in 500 years. That sounds about right. And on the subject of all that talk about change, Geena Davis says …

Yes, Hillary IS a feminist…
This morning, a young woman writer named Michelle Goldberg wrote a piece in The Daily Beast titled The Re-invention of Hillary Clinton, in which Michelle writes that she has apparently discovered (my emphasis added):
A year ago today, Hillary Clinton ended her presidential campaign—to the relief of many. But even her critics must admit that as secretary of State, she’s been a feminist hero to behold.
To the relief of who Michelle? You? Yes – Michelle goes on (my emphasis again):
One year ago today, Hillary Clinton ended her presidential campaign, …
