Man offers Frito-Lay Chips for Sex

|This news is making the rounds:
The woman was arrested; the man was not. A sampling of headlines follows. See any imbalance?
Oklahoma City Woman trades sex for case of chips (The Oklahoman)
Police say Okla. prostitute accepted unusual payment (USA Today blog)
Prostitute’s Price: A $30 Box of Chips (The Business Insider)
Woman Trades Sex for Snack Chips (MyFox Chicago)
The award for gender balance — if not taste — goes to The Smoking Gun:
Chips and Dip. Cops: Prostitute, Frito-Lay worker agreed on exchange of oral treats.
The Smoking Gun not only gave a balanced headline, but was the only source that in addition to printing the name of the prostitute, also printed the name of the john: Faron Johnson.

This piece of “news” has probably reached a national scale and was picked up off the wire services because it’s “entertaining” to some. I’m sure people will read this and laugh at the idea of a woman offering sexual services for a box of snack food.
I find this story sad. As pointed out, the woman is being mocked, her name and face being put out there for all to see, while the man is being shielded by all but one media source.
These people really should read Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz’s writing. She was a 17th century nun who is considered one of the first philosophers of the New World. (You should all look her up.)
In one of her most famous works, ‘Hombres Necios’ (which can be very loosely translated into ‘Foolish Men’), she asks who’s more to blame and who is more the sinner, the woman who offers sex for survival or the man who pays for sex for no other reason than sinful pleasure.
Instead of mocking this woman shouldn’t we be ashamed that anyone in this country is forced into a situation where they have to offer up their bodies for food?
I turned someone in for soliciting prostitutes in 2004. The police did NOTHING. They busted the brothel & madam but allowed the john I blew in (who was a long-time customer) to walk away. That’s justice?
One more reason why we need the Swedish style law against prostitution – criminalize the johns, not the prostituted women and children. The patriarchal law and media is never going to be fair to women unless it is forced to.
