Probation? Community service? Hey, can a white guy get that kind of deal? Beat the crap out of a sistah and walk, I mean? Or are special deals like that reserved for the bruthas?

Sheeeiit, sistahs, y’all ought to date white boys. They whack you and you get to send them to prison for a hate crime! But then again, maybe you like the Chris Brown-style “roughin’ up” y’all get.

I like how the judge (a woman) handled this case. First, the two-way “stay-away” order prevents Chris and Rihanna from orchestrating a reconciliation, as they tried to do at the basketball game a while back. Restoring that relationship to “celebrity lovebird” status would distort the focus from domestic violence to their “love story” and advance the misconceptions already held by young girls (that she was equally to blame because she hit him first and that domestic violence is easily resolved and therefore “no big deal”).

This stay away order effectively eliminates the couple’s PR people– who would obviously like to spin this away from all the most disturbing aspects of the issue–from the equation. imo and in the words of the immortal Martha Stewart THAT IS A GOOD THING.

I’m also really REALLY glad Chris Brown pleaded guilty, so the most important aspects of domestic violence weren’t buried by 24/7 cable squabbling over a “she hit me first” defense, which some misogynists would have undoubtedly mutated into an argument of “well, if they want equality then they have to realize that if they’re going to hit a guy, then they’re going to get hit BY a guy.” I could just see the usual sexist suspects lining up to make that case, so thank God that’s not going to happen.

This case was a win for for women. Domestic violence was treated like a crime, and for the next five years the celebrity-worshipping public will see a high profile celebrity cleaning graffitti off walls and picking up trash off the road BECAUSE HE BEAT UP A WOMAN.

Shout-out to the judge.
