Word is spreading. We won’t back down!!!

Our press release has already been picked up by New York area Newsday.

Prominent liberal blog TalkingPointsMemo writes:

Good for Dave. Good for women. Amy Siskind over at Huffington Post noted recently that Letterman had invoked a new era of feminism, just as many of her co-bloggers were sadly finding new ways to excuse the sexist jokes (“hey, others have told sexist jokes – why is Letterman being punished?”, or “she announced it”, or “she put the kids on stage” or “they made rape/child molestation jokes about Willow in September, why’d she wait to complain until now?”). Amy’s point is that old-style feminism is dead, perhaps because no one’s listening anymore or all of its terms have been co-opted and twisted.

And the Letterman Show loses it’s second sponsor this week (hat tip to Ann and PumaForLife for sharing):

Hello, Thank you for contacting us regarding your disappointment with the program content which contained a commercial for a Unilever product. We never wish to offend anyone and your opinions are appreciated regarding this subject matter. Advertising for Hellmann’s or media buys are done months in advance and unfortunately we can’t foresee issues in the media before they come up. We appreciate the feedback from our consumers and we’ve decided to pull our online ads from the Letterman show from our advertising schedule moving forward. We hope that this information has given you a better understanding of our advertising practices. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views with us. You can be assured that your comments will be considered as we continue to challenge our perceptions about what is appropriate for us in today’s environment. Kind regards, Your friends at Hellmann’s/Best Foods

Please help us to continue this fight. Press releases, professional fees, web maintanance etc. cost money. The New Agenda is an organization dedicated to changing our country to make it better for women and girls. Please join us!

Update: For those who didn’t have a chance to see Letterman’s second apology last night, here it is:

I never watch Letterman, I found irrelevant long ago. But did he actually apologize this time? Because from what I read It sounded like he sort of said something like…. I guess some overly sensitive people were off on one of their piss offs over something they thought I said. But I don’t say those sorts of things, I never have but if I did it would have been bad taste. Really women, cut the cable, download only the content you want to watch and stop subsidizing this corporate media garbage. Anyone dumb enough to insult or ignore 52% of the population deserves to be put out of business.

Yes, he actually apologized, took full responsibility. I am SO IMPRESSED with The New Agenda and the other feminist bloggers for moving swiftly and effectively on this. We need to ensure that the media take us seriously when it isn’t a popular Republican woman who is being targeted. The media moguls are not going to be as sympathetic if the target is Hillary Clinton or someone of the Democratic/liberal persuasion.

    - I’ll say it again, CBS knew darn well Willow was with Mom at the game and the joke was still scripted and Letterman had no hesitation at all in delivering the attack on women in general, the Palins in particular.

Thanks to HELLMAN’s! I always liked their product s over the years, especially their great mayo, but was determined to stop buying them to join in solidarity to get that pathetic sexist perv Letterman off the air.
Do we have a list of all the other companies. I was thinking of canceling our Capitol credit card as well. This time I mean business. “I’m mad as hell and I am not gonna take it any more”

Consider canceling the TV cable. Download only the content you want to watch. Stop subsidizing sexist garbage with your “basic cable” payment.

Wow, TPM. Didn’t think they had it in them after the campaign season and the whole Linda Hirshman debacle.

Just to make it clear, it was me, not “TPM”. Just a l’il ol’ blogger, sometimes backed, sometimes attacked. But happy somewhere someone else is reading.

if you feel inclined, may or may not like the archived posts, but seldom boring (I think)

You were still on the front page and no one shut you down/silenced you on your own thread. I saw that on every other post in the last 18 months about Clinton, Palin or sexism at TPM.

    Commenter still in denial:

I don’t think the blogs or any other kind of pressure had anything to do with Letterman’s decision to apologize. I think he simply stumbled into one of his own (sexist) blind spots without truly realizing it at first. I think he was genuinely distressed about it.

I am going to write the producers and actors on Criminal Minds and ask them to switch channels. It is airing on CBS, and that show is one of the most respectful to women currently on television.
