Supreme Court Leaves Loophole in the Pregnancy Discrimination Act
The author is expressing his own views, not necessarily those of The New Agenda. To read more, see this AP Story. Dissenting Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is quoted as saying, “Congress intended no continuing reduction of women’s compensation, pension benefits included, attributable to their placement on pregnancy leave.”
Women who took maternity leave before it became illegal to discriminate against pregnant women can’t sue to get their leave time to count for their pensions, the Supreme Court decided Monday. The high court overturned a lower court decision that said decades-old maternity …

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
A TNA member who lives in my community made an interesting observation the other day:
If Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin or Michelle Obama or for that matter, any woman, ran for office today, would she be treated any differently than the misogyny-fest of 2008?
Unfortunately, we both knew the answer: “no!” The member added:
The New Agenda is our only HOPE.
Which brings me to an email that I received:
I believe TNA has an incredible opportunity here for a truly unique organization to help women move forward and educate the country that …

Throwing Like a Girl
Amidst our concern about the negative social trends pressuring our girls and young women today, it’s nice to be able to celebrate a positive trend: the increasing participation of women in the disc-throwing team sport, ultimate. The game resembles football in that teams score when they complete a pass across a goal line (there’s no running the disc), and it also resembles soccer or basketball, in that players switch from offense to defense immediately upon a turnover. About 10,000 of the 30,000 members of the Ultimate Players Association are women, …

The Sexualization of our Daughters…another example…
As we have been discussing on our blog, there are many ways in which our teenage girls are sexualized – some overt, some covert.
Take for example the popular song by Britney Spears: If You Seek Amy. The title seems innocuous enough and to many the words may just seem confusing while they bee-bop to the tune of the song. But not our teenagers. They know what the secret message is that is being sent:
Love me hate me
Say what you want about me
But all of the boys and all of the …

Art Galleries: Bastion of….Men?
Sasha Wolf owns the art gallery that will be the site for The New Agenda’s first fundraiser. In addition to her impeccable talents as a curator, turns out Sasha is also a talented feminist writers. Please join us on June 1st at Sasha Wolf Gallery for our first fundraiser.
As people in the arts we maintain a certain lofty feeling of having long ago evolved beyond basic gender inequalities. Women appear to own and manage art galleries almost in equal measure to men and, well, just go into any …

Women Stride Toward Governors’ Mansions: Where We Can Make A Difference in 2010
Adelaide “Alex” Sink this week announced her candidacy for the governorship of Florida, aiming to replace Charlie Crist, who will run for the U.S. Senate in 2010. According to Tampa Bay Online, Sink, who currently is the state’s Chief Financial Officer, is likely to run unopposed in the Democratic primary, and is likely to face Republican Attorney General Bill McCollum in the general election. Though Bill McCollum is more widely known in the state, one early poll has the candidates virtually tied. In other words, this is an election in …

Being a Woman Veteran
Kayla Williams is a former sergeant and Arabic linguist in a Military Intelligence company of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and served our country in Iraq. This essay is cross-posted from Vet Voice.
I was honored and proud to be invited to the Shout! Art by Women Veterans show put on in San Francisco by Swords to Plowshares, a great organization. It was amazing for me to be around so many other women veterans at one time. Normally, when I go to any veterans’ events, it’s just like my time …

Not too hot, Not too cold….
This article is not going to win me any popularity contests. But, it needs to be said.
On Monday, we published a short piece on our blog about a Sunday NYT Business article titled Backlash: Women Bullying Women at Work. From the comments on our blog and the emails that I received, it seems this story has really hit a nerve.
Now I’ll be the first to say that the MSM likes nothing better than a negative story about women. If we learned nothing else in 2008, it’s that no woman is …

Health Insurance: Bastion of Gender-based Pricing
“Jewell” is the nom de plume for a co-founder of The New Agenda.
As the debate over healthcare continues to build steam, interest groups are covering their bases to ensure their needs are met (or at least not hurt much). President Obama continues to meet with health industry and business leaders who pledged to cut the rate of spending increases by $2 trillion over 10 years.
How will those cuts affect women? Health plans – one of the biggest drivers of costs with continual premium hikes – have agreed …
