What Every Woman Should Know about Dorothea Dix

Apr 13, 2009 | 5 Comments

Dorothea "Dolly" Dix (1802-1887)
Fiercely independent, Dorothea Dix left her dysfunctional home in then upper Massachusetts (later Maine) in 1814 at the tender age of twelve. Arriving in Boston and supported by wealthy grandparents, Dix took advantage of the greater educational opportunity. While only fourteen years old, she started a successful school for young children in Worcester, which she ran for three years. Dolly, as she was known, started a dame school in 1821, when she was only 19 years old. The dame school placed a special emphasis on botany, an …

TNA in NY Daily News: The Daily Politics

Apr 12, 2009 | One Comment

Yesterday, The New Agenda was the subject of an article in the NY Daily News titled Domestic Violence and the DA’s Race. Thanks to the reporter for mentioning our VAW Forum, reminding us that Crocker-Snyder would be Manhattan’s FIRST female DA (NY State is 23rd in the country in terms of women in politics), and reminding NY residents about State Senator Hiram Monserrate.
Our only complaint is this:  the reporter should have explained how common it is for women to recant their statements after being intimidated.  This factor …

Happy 8 month birthday TNA!

8 candles for 8 fabulous months
Where does time go?
It seems only yesterday that 30 women from around the country gathered in my living room. We were upset by how Hillary Clinton was treated and we vowed never again would we be silent when a female candidate or elected official was treated that way. On that day, we decided to put aside our hurt, upset and anger and do what needed to be done. Work on what unites us, not divide us: time to get …

The Cronkite Award for this?

Apr 10, 2009 | 43 Comments

This is an update to a piece originally posted on our blog on October 1, 2008 titled What Palin ACTUALLY Said.
At that time, having just read the full transcript of Katie Couric’s interview of Sarah Palin, I was incredulous at what our media chose to include and exclude. So I did something novel. I cut and pasted Governor Palin’s ACTUAL answers to some tough questions. This exercise took me a total of about 10 minutes. That evening, our blog piece was “pinged” all over the internet, including on Propeller …

Larry Summers gets punked!

Apr 9, 2009 | 4 Comments

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this video is worth $135,000 (or the money paid to Larry Summers for a single speaking engagement).
Recall that we wrote in our piece Larry Summers collects $8 million from Wall Street, we explained that part of that $2.7 million of that dough was earned for speaking engagements to Wall Street firms!
What makes matter worse is that the biggest fee, $135,000, was earned for a speaking engagement for Goldman Sachs. The New York Times recently reported:
Goldman Sachs was …

The patriarchy enablers

Apr 9, 2009 | 53 Comments

Tina Fey promoted sexist stereotypes with her parody of Sarah
Palin last year, depicting the Alaska Governor as a brainless bimbo.
As we all know, patriarchy bestows its smiles and kisses on the women who do its bidding, especially those women who take on the front-line enforcer jobs of shredding other women to bits. Last year a whole bunch of women signed up for duty on the Sarah Palin Evisceration Squad, none more prominently than Tina Fey. And the rewards for her efforts keep pouring in. She’s been on …
