Don’t Miss It! Women’s Art to See While Visiting Santa Fe New Mexico
While you are visiting Santa Fe, don’t miss a chance to visit the New Mexico Museum of Art. One of the featured collections is that of pioneer photographer Laura Gilpin. Gilpin loved the areas of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. She took pictures of these regions, which suggested a kind of quiet intimacy that only a native of the area could have. Gilpin had her first published picture, which was a view of the Grand Cannon, in a photography magazine in 1916.
After that picture had been published, Gilpin hiked, drove, and flew tens of thousands of miles across the Southwest to get more pictures. Weeks before her death Laura was flying over the Rio Grande valley to take her last photographs. Her pictures suggest new ways to look at the limited body of landscape work done by contemporary women photographers. Gilpin’s approach to landscapes and photography set her apart from the men who also documented the same subjects.
For Gilpin the southwestern landscape was neither an empty vista awaiting human settlement, nor a jewel-like scene resisting human intrusion. Gilpin died in 1979 at the age of 88.
