Did This Senator Beat Up His Girlfriend?

by Amy Siskind

A New York state senator faces felony charges for allegedly slashing up his girlfriend’s face—and some of the assault was caught on camera. So why is he still welcome in the Senate—and why are Democrats still holding fundraisers for him?

Which is worse: political leaders remaining silent about a colleague who slashes his girlfriend’s face, or political leaders actively funding and supporting the criminal slasher? Well, in the Empire State, we have both!

In the past few months, our country has witnessed two high-profile cases of violence against women—Chris Brown’s alleged assault of Rihanna and the beheading of Aasiya Hassan. In the aftermath, advocates for reducing domestic violence saw a ray of hope: Could our country finally start a much-needed dialogue about violence against women, bring it into the light of day, and work toward solutions? When New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens) was indicted and arraigned last week on six counts of assault for allegedly beating up his girlfriend, we stepped back into the darkness.

I commented on this piece directly on The Daily Beast site.

However, I notice that now when I go to The Daily Beast and search for the name Monserrate, I get a page with some links to this article, but clicking them produces an error and the article is not to be had.

Tried last night and again today, several times.

I do reach the full article through the link on your page here, but, I think that is happening only because it is cached on my browser.

Do you happen to know what is going on?

Here it is Scott – they had to pull it down a couple of times because Moserrate’s PR guy David Goldin kept accusing them of factual inaccuracies. Here’s the link for where it is reposted (i’ll change it above)

Amy, clicking on the link listed in your post of April 8th, 12:49 pm, directs one to the following article: “August 31, 2008: THE NEW AGENDA to Serve as Watch Dog for Women Candidates”, not your Daily Beast article.

Right now, the article is accessible here: http://www.thedailybeast.com/b.....girlfriend

    Strategy idea:
Let’s keep a list of all of the situations Monseratte’s PR guy, David Goldin, has attempted to prevent the public from learning about Monseratte’s procivilty to violence against women.

Then, TNA could issue a Press Release, outlining briefly each of the the repeated attempts to silence the media (including all the newspapers, online media locations, etc). Could note how hard Monserrate is working and how much money indicted felons have to pay PR firms to stay in office; meanwhile their NY State Senate colleagues throw fundraisers to help indicted felons stay in office . . . Where is the moral outrage?

[...] Monserrate was arrested in 2008 after a dispute and physical altercation between him and his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, was caught on a surveillance tape. He was later [...]
