Don’t Break out the Champagne Quite Yet….

Mar 17, 2009 | 43 Comments

Last night on Ophelia we had a good old fashioned venting session – and wow, was it fun!  There is something so cathartic about getting it out in the open and off your chest.
This morning, I opened my email to find a blog piece written by Allison Stevens of Women’s eNews titled Cabinet Disappoints; Other Obama Moves Win Raves. In her piece, Allison writes about how some women’s group (ahem – that would be The New Agenda) took offense to Obama’s pick of Larry Summers and the fact that …

New Feminist Media UPDATED

Mar 17, 2009 | 14 Comments

The email address is now correct. Please try it again.
As the MSM collapses under the burden of its sins and the public increasingly hunts its news down on the information superhighway, the blogosphere suddenly finds itself in pole position on the issues that matter today — able to frame the discourse in a way and with a voice it never could have anticipated.
If ever Feminism had a chance to make its concerns known to a wider audience, to get them out there where they will be heard and to …

Sexism? What Sexism? “iGirl”

Mar 16, 2009 | 8 Comments

Editor’s Note: Sexism? What Sexism? is a new series highlighting sexism and misogyny in our culture, answers for those asking.

 The "girl" from iGirl

“What’s all this fuss about sexism?”
“Sexism? I just don’t see it.”
“Can you give me some examples of this sexism?”
Sound familiar?
If you are like me, you’ve been on the receiving end of such questions over the past year. Today, my answer to these questions is another question:
Why is iGirl one of the Top 10 most downloaded and purchased iPhone applications?
What or who is iGirl? First and foremost, according to the …

What Every Woman Should Know About the 19th Amendment

Mar 16, 2009 | 9 Comments

What Every Woman Should Know is a bi-weekly series on American Women’s History. The series is weekly in March, which is Women’s History Month. This article has been edited from an original version, which was posted here.
The 19th Amendment
The final push for elective franchise for women is one of the most riveting tales in American history. As Harriot Stanton Blatch said after the Amendment was ratified:
All honor to women, the first disenfranchised class in history who, unaided by any political party, won enfranchisement by its own effort alone and achieved …

The Exploitation of Sexual Confusion

Mar 15, 2009 | 41 Comments

Editor’s Note: Guest contributor Karen is a college student and History major.

Our country no longer recognizes the difference between sexual exploitation and sexual empowerment. This confusion is one of the most dangerous threats to women’s empowerment, as it can lead to women’s groups unintentionally condoning exploitation and can further objectify their sisters. Until we realize the difference between sexual exploitation and sexual empowerment, we will have a steep and stark climb to the top, stumbling over our own efforts.
In that part of the nighttime, not tomorrow but not yesterday, there …

Beyond Gossip, Good and Evil

Mar 14, 2009 | 15 Comments

Reposted from Ill Doctrine with permission of the author, whose website and other writings can be found here.
In the month since the Chris Brown and Rihanna case broke, bodies of women killed by their current or former intimate partners have piled up. Young love is supposed to hurt a bit emotionally, but increasingly, it bruises. The vociferous response to Chris Brown and Rihanna Fenty, and the range of perspectives on who has the right to hit whom, make it clear that we need to talk about this issue more …
