Ophelia talks about being a mom later in life….

Ophelia was feeling totally invigorated after her great vent session last Monday night. To celebrate – what’s a girl to do but go to the supermarket and stock up on pork rinds.
While Ophelia was standing in the check out line at the supermarket, she struck up the most interesting conversation with a young woman. This young woman was in her 20s and was concerned about managing her career and being able to have a family. She told Ophelia all about how her generation married later and wanted to have it all. To Ophelia having it all meant soda, pork rinds and peanut M&M’s, but not to this young woman. She and her generation are concerned about being able to have children and navigate a career. She wondered if this was possible? She was anxious about having children and having her career run off track.
Ophelia thought long and hard over the week about this important subject and decided to reach out to Elizabeth Gregory who has written a most interesting book titled Ready: Why Women Are Embracing the New Later Motherhood. In the book, Elizabeth discusses the fact that:
…in 2006, 610,998 babies overall (CDC preliminary count) were born to moms 35 and over—regardless of birth order (out of a total 4,140,419 births).
* That’s one in seven babies born in 2006 to a mom 35 or over.
* In 2004 (latest available data), 4.4% of the births to moms 35 and over involved IVF (about 27,800).
So grab your coffee, tea, water, wine or whiskey and join us this Monday, March 23rd from 10-11 p.m. EST on Chewing the Fat with Ophelia. Please call in and chat with Elizabeth and Ophelia and let us know what you are thinking about this important topic!

This should be a great show. When I faced that same dilemma that so many of us face—-how to balance career and motherhood, I was lucky. I had been a musician until my children came along. The musician’s life was difficult to balance with what I wanted to do as a mother. Fortunately, the perfect career opportunity came along for me. I became a consultant (and then a Sales Director) with Mary Kay where I was able to build a business in my home, make a 6-figure income, and still be able to be at home and raise my boys the way I wanted to. And it was a business that did well regardless of the economy. I have felt as if I’ve had my cake and ate it too!! Her’s a recent CBS Evening News account:

Can’t wait to hear Ophelia’s guest’s take on the issue!!!!
Will definitely listen in with my daughter who just turned 30. She and her friends have already discussed freezing their eggs-that seems to be the only downside to late motherhood-biology and it can be overcome.
