March 10 National Women’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
Join The New Agenda in issuing a national call to action to address the growing crisis of HIV/AIDS among women the week of March 10 — National Women’s HIV/AIDS Awareness day. Visit The New Agenda’s blog for posts starting this Friday, March 6 on how and why women are increasingly vulnerable, the barriers to protecting more women, and what can be done to avert the crisis.
March 9 The New Agenda radio show “Chewing the Fat with Ophelia” will host a warrior in the battle against HIV/AIDS among women: Dr. Bambi W. Gaddist Executive Director of The South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council (SCHAC) and spokesperson for Living Quilt.org. Gaddist will tell us why the disturbing growth in new cases among women persists, the implications of AIDS policies in an Obama administration, and what we can do about it.
HIV/AIDS is increasingly affecting women. It is the leading cause of death for black women aged 25-34 and the fourth leading cause of death for Hispanic women aged 35-44. HIV/AIDS is the 5th leading cause of death for all women aged 35-44, behind cancers and heart disease.
