TNA continues to press our case for women in politics…
Today, Cynthia Ruccia, co-founder of The New Agenda, had an op-ed piece titled Isn’t it time Ohio sent a woman to the U.S. Senate? in the Dayton Daily News. In part, thanks to TNA’s work in Ohio, a Democratic woman has already thrown her hat in the ring to run. We are hopeful that a Republican woman will do so shortly as well.
Ohioans have a rare opportunity to elect their first female U.S. senator. Now that Sen. George V. Voinovich is retiring, the jockeying in both parties has …

Tom Bevan needs to get a clue (UPDATED)
Tom Bevan at Real Clear Politics writes a follow-up on Amy’s piece on The Daily Beast about the murder of Aasiya Hassan. In Apples & Oranges?, Bevan relates a news story about another domestic violence homicide, and draws parallels and distinctions between the two incidents:
The two cases are not that far apart in the details: both involved a husband/boyfriend who brutally murdered his wife/girlfriend. And Suskind’s point is surely true: if a man is intent upon committing violence against a woman – up to and including murder – there is precious …

How’d the Fraternity of Leadership do with car makers?
In December, I had what felt like a surreal experience. I was watching the hearings for The Big Three Automotive Companies Bailout and all I could see was a sea of white men. I posited at the time Did I Fall Asleep and Wake in Up 1950?.
In an article in The Daily Beast, I wrote:
Wow, what an experience. A bunch of white males (with the exception of Sen. Dole) who clearly understood little of the underlying dynamics of an industry puffing their collective chests out and asking a …

Do women lead like bad men or good women?
The Onion made the spoof below about a woman dictator in East Timor being just as bloodthirsty as her male predecessors.
I don’t know how many times I’ve heard the argument that women wouldn’t behave any better than men once they were in power. “Women are just as vulnerable to corruption and foolhardiness as men,” the refrain seems to go, “and so what would putting more women in power achieve?”
The response that immediately pops to mind is, Well, duh!—it means there will be more women in power.
Because so what if women …

Ophelia welcomes Peggy Klaus…..
Can we talk here? I mean can we really talk?
Ophelia is back from her short reprieve and she is ready to get back into action.
This week, Ophelia is thrilled to welcome a special guest – Peggy Klaus. Ophelia first discovered Peggy on a quiet Sunday afternoon, while, in between eating bags of pork rinds, Ophelia picked up the New York Times Business Section and read a really neat article by Peggy titled A Sisterhood of Workplace Infighting in which Peggy describes the challenges of how women treat one another in …

TNA speaks out on beheading of Aasiya Hassan….
The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind wrote an op-ed piece which is posted today on The Daily Beast titled: The Debate Over Aasiya’s Murder.
In the piece we argue:
Aasiya’s murder could serve to elucidate our country’s gravest societal crisis—violence against women. The problem is, her killing has touched off a debate among feminists on several fronts, including whether hers was an honor killing or domestic violence; multicultural relativism; Islamic violence on our shores; and whether we should even be speaking out about this particular murder in the first place. Yet in …

Secretary of…Daycare?
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivers a lecture on women’s competitiveness at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Friday. (Yonhap)
You can’t make this stuff up.
On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech in Seoul on the importance of women’s rights:
“No country has yet achieved full equality for women. There is still a lot ahead for us to make sure that gender equality becomes reality,” she said. “Part of my mission as the secretary of state is (making sure) the United States is committed to enhancing the rights of …

Women’s rights and culture
Aasiya HassanEarlier this week I wrote about the horrific murder of Aasiya Hassan, whose husband beheaded her in what may have been an honor killing. For many commenters on the web, it is apparently impossible to condemn this nightmare without hastening to add that American culture has plenty of its own home-grown brand of misogyny, and it’s therefore “intolerant” to notice the particular lethalness of the honor-shame paradigm in some non-Western cultures. You know the argument: America is full of sexism and the commodification of women and …
