BL_Pat SummitOn Feb. 5th, on her home court at the University of Tennessee, Lady Vol’s basketball coach Pat Summit became the first coach in Div. I college basketball to accumulate 1000 career victories.

Summit’s amazing career coaching college basketball stretches back to her first win as coach of the Tennessee Lady Vol’s on January 10th 1975. Devoted fans were thrilled to learn that Coach Summit has been signed to a contract extension that will carry her into 2014 with what can truly be described as “her” Lady Vol’s team.

The University of Tennessee congratulated Coach Summit with a commemorative necklace, bracelet, and painting to celebrate the historic accomplishment. It is also worth noting, along with the lovely gifts from fans and the University, comes a $200,000 bonus for Coach Summit. Over 16,000 screaming fans were in attendance last night to cheer Coach Summit to her 1000th win.

Notable coaches left in Summit’s dust:

Bob Knight, former coach at Indiana and Texas Tech at (902)
Adolph Rupp former coach at Kentucky (876)
Dean Smith former coach at North Carolina (879)

Thank you for this post. I’m totally and utterly not into sports, BUT, I totally and utterly can appreciate women’s achievements and this is own of them and is so worthy of recognition. Plus, some posts are more button-pushing than others and I think that posts that are more purely educational tend to get less traffic, which is a shame. If nothing else, this post and others like it deserve us all to come together to say:

Hurray and here’s one for the team!!!!
