Rosie the Riveter, Part 2 and the Irish Times
No, you can’t make this stuff up.
You’ll all recall what occurred after WW2. Those wonderful women who were the work horses that kept the US economy going were sent back to familiar ground: the home. After all, the men were coming back from the war and they wanted their jobs back.
This week, The Irish Times featured an article titled Working women almost certainly caused the credit crunch.
Now, I’ll have to admit it. When I first opened the link to story I had the same reaction that I had when I …

Monserrate goes back to court, we get a letter from a DV prosecutor (UPDATED)
Yesterday, NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate had another preliminary court appearance, where his lawyer, Irving Seidman, requested that the judge remove the order of protection prohibiting Monserrate from contacting or seeing his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo. Seidman also demanded that the prosecutor, Scott Kessler, described by a colleague as a “nationally recognized expert in domestic violence prosecutions,” be removed from the case. The judge refused both requests.
The defense is claiming that the charges against Monserrate are being driven by a political agenda, rather than a quest for justice. Karla Giraldo made …

BOYLES CALLS DIANA DEGETTE “VAGINA DEGETTE”
As members of The New Agenda, we will all work together to beat back sexism when it rears its ugly head.
The latest poster boy for sexism is Peter Boyles, a Colorado radio show host. Peter thinks it is “funny” to use a vastly inappropriate term about a highly respected Congresswoman, Diana DeGette. The …

Political Correctness and “The Right Man For the Job”
President Barack Obama announces his nominee for Commerce Secretary, former Washington Gov. Gary Locke, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009. (Xinhua)
When I read about yet another man being named to Obama’s cabinet, I admit, it came as no surprise. I mean, let’s face it, Larry “Girls Can’t Do Math” Summers is the one running the show when it comes to “fixing” our economy. Can we really expect someone like this to allow his man Obama to name a woman as Secretary of Commerce? No. However, I was actually surprised to read …

Kudos to five Republican supporters of fair pay
Editor’s note: We’re pleased to present this guest post from a college student who is starting a grassroots chapter of The New Agenda on her campus.
The Republican women and man who voted for the Lilly Ledbetter Act have proven that women’s issues should be everyone’s concern regardless of political affiliation. They are Senators Kay Hutchison from Texas, Olympia Snowe of Maine, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. They recognized and understood that women deserve equal pay, so they crossed party …

Cabinet Count: 18 men, 5 women: this is acceptable?
As Maria Bartiromo of CNBC put it yesterday: “three times a charm.”
Yesterday, President Obama nominated his third pick for Commerce Secretary. President Obama’s first two picks, Bill Richardson and Judd Gregg both pulled their names from consideration.
With this pick, President Obama has now nominated a total of 23 people for cabinet level positions. Of the 23 picked, 18 have been men and only 5 are women. This amounts to 22% of President Obama’s picks being women, although 52% of the population is women. Far cry from acceptable.
President Obama has one …

Oops-I Owe Chris Brown an Apology!
I finally get it! DUH!!!
Well, don’t I have egg on my face today! Since the Feb. 7th “incident” I have been ranting and raving about Chris Brown, the man who allegedly assaulted singer Rihanna, and left her with cuts and bruises to her face. To my chagrin, as the NY Daily News points out, I had the story all wrong and as it turns out, SHE DESERVED IT! Imagine my shame and embarrassment when I read this:
But insiders are rumbling that Chris shouldn’t be taking the anger management classes alone. “Rihanna …

Kim Gandy defends patriarchy, rejects efforts to combat violence against women
Editor’s note: Violet Socks is in a bad mood and speaking only for herself. Her opinions should not be construed as an official statement by The New Agenda.
What does this picture have to do with the post? Guess you’d better read the post and see. — V.S.
I know I put a provocative title on this post, but I call ‘em like I see ‘em. In her Below The Belt column of February 20, Kim Gandy spends half a sentence mourning the fate of Aasiya Hassan, and …

How an 11 year-old sees sexism….
The author of this piece is Amy Siskind’s 11 year-old daughter, Amanda – an aspiring feminist!
Sexism isn’t finished. The New Agenda has done their hardest to stop it. Why do sports video games only star men? No woman, what a surprise. People say ‘No Sarah Palin!’ But we need a woman in the White House! Whether it’s her or Hillary.
How do you think all those woman athletes feel? When they go watch TV they flip the channel to only find ‘Men’s College Basketball’, ‘NBA’ ‘NFL’ commercials and games. What about …
