“Remember the Ladies”, by Jared Polis, Member of Congress, Colorado, 2nd Congressional District

Jan 26, 2009 | 17 Comments

Reposted from Jared Polis’ Facebook with permission of the author.
“In the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.” ABIGAIL ADAMS TO JOHN ADAMS, MARCH 31, 1776
One of the most important pieces of legislation we’ll soon be acting on in Congress is a national economic recovery package. A large portion of the new federal spending—perhaps as much as 20 percent—will be focused on infrastructure construction, …

Framing the Cunt: the use of sexist stereotypes in the 2008 election – Part 1

Jan 26, 2009 | 41 Comments

I don’t usually talk about this, but when I was fifteen years old I read a book called The Social Animal by Elliot Aaronson, which explained how to manipulate and control people. You can get people to do things they might not otherwise do, without them knowing you’re doing it? Amazing! So I did what any curious teenager might: I tried experimenting on my friends.
The results were disturbing. Pretty soon, my friends were doing what I wanted, when I wanted. I wasn’t prepared for this. I hadn’t really considered that …

Rosa Clemente on Ophelia

Jan 25, 2009 | 28 Comments

LISTEN: Chewing the Fat with Ophelia, Monday at 10 pm EST.
CALL IN: (347) 324-5942.

For me its not only about holding Obama, the House of Representatives, or the United States Senate accountable. Holding public officials accountable is important, but building a multi-racial social justice movement is a necessity for our very existence.
— Rosa Clemente
Ophelia is thrilled to be hosting Rosa Clemente, VP candidate for the Green Party in 2008, as well as Jenn Lee, co-founder of TNA.  Join us for an exciting discussion on promoting women in politics.

What a week at The New Agenda….

Jan 24, 2009 | 48 Comments

What a week for our 5 month-old organization! I want to personally thank all of our members for their hard work and continued support. Here’s some exciting accomplishments of TNA:
Thank you, Gov. Paterson!
Kirsten Gillibrand takes the open NY senate seat: we are just thrilled! TNA had vocally advocated for Sen Gillibrand. Having met Sen Gillibrand, I can attest that she is a real feminist and the “real deal.” This is a woman who is presidential material. Sen Gillibrand is grateful for our organization’s …

Does Obama’s Cabinet Look Like America?

Jan 24, 2009 | 45 Comments

The numbers below reflect the percentage of Arab Americans, Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans and women within the U.S. population, followed by the percentage of each group in Obama’s cabinet, based on 21 seats.
The last number is the difference in those percentages, shown as either a gain or a loss for equal representation in cabinet for that group.
Because no one has yet been appointed to take Bill Richardson’s place as Secretary of Commerce, the numbers are calculated for 2 and 3 individuals in the Latino group.

Time for Ohio to Move Women Forward (UPDATED)

Jan 24, 2009 | 10 Comments

The New Agenda sent out the following press release yesterday:
Time for Ohio to Move Women Forward
(Columbus, OH) — The New Agenda, a new national nonpartisan women’s rights organization, calls on both the Ohio Republican and Democratic Parties to nominate a pool of talented women to run for the U.S. Senate in 2010.
Sen. George V. Voinovich’s decision not to seek re-election next year kicked off a round of jockeying that must include Ohio women,” said Cynthia Ruccia, co-Founder of The New Agenda. “Ohio has never elected a woman to the U.S. …

The New Agenda on CNN

Jan 23, 2009 | 37 Comments

We know we’re girls and therefore genetically bad at math, but we’ve been keeping a pretty close eye on this, and can’t imagine how we missed it. According to our Cabinent Watch page, Obama has only appointed women to 5 out of 21 seats, but CNN says it’s 6 women. We feel a little silly asking, but if there’s a sixth woman out there that we don’t know about, will someone slip us a note under the table? We’d hate to look like we can’t get our facts straight.
Here’s the …

Misogyny Kills: Rick Warren, Mark Dybul, and AIDS (Part Three)

Jan 23, 2009 | 9 Comments

Editor’s note: This is Part Three of a three-part series on the links between the religious right, President Obama’s “AIDS czar” Mark Dybul, and the faith-based programs that are killing women and girls around the world. Parts One and Two were published earlier this week.
Rick Warren at Saddleback's 2007 Global Summit on AIDS and the Church
The New Partners Initiative
When Mark Dybul took over from Randall Tobias at PEPFAR, he continued the agency’s support for religion-based programs, despite his duty to promote the most effective, science-based strategies for the …
