TAKE ACTION TODAY – Congress votes on Equal Pay!

Historically, women suffer greater hardship in times of economic downturn. In these tough economic times, women must have equal pay for equal work for their own security and the security of their children.
“Workplace legislation coming to a head in Congress” writes Diane Stafford of the Kansas City Star.
The U.S. House is expected to vote on, and probably pass, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act — two bills that would make it easier for workers to fight pay discrimination.
As debate moves to the Senate, though, we probably will witness a collision of business leaders decrying an assault on capitalism versus advocates touting much-needed empowerment for working Americans.
TAKE ACTION: go to the National Women’s Law Center for an quick and easy way to make sure your voice is heard.
Contact your Members of Congress today and give them the clear message that they must pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act immediately, so that President-Elect Obama can sign them into law upon taking office.

Fair Pay for women is an important objective of TNA.
Let’s all stay informed and do what we can to help push along this important piece of legislation!
Hi,
Just to add some urgency to this action, the house will vote on this in the next 48 hours. So please act today!
I received an email about this from Credo Action too. It cannot hurt to sign their petition and complete Nat’l Women’s Law Center form which seems to send your email directly to your representative.

Here’s an excerpt from the email:
“There will be a battle in the Senate, and the best way to come out of the gate strong is for the bill to pass by an overwhelming majority in the House.”
Let’s get this session off to the right start!
This blog needs a search function. I can find that post of Anna’s (I think it was Anna) with all the contact names and e-mails.
There are a number of people in the know who are very upset about Obama’s plans to appoint shillmeister Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General.
They are asking for contact information for Obama.
I **can’t** find.
TNA – Thank you for posting this. Will do all action items today.
Mamabroad – Thanks for the additional info.
Sis – Not sure what post you’re referring to, but usually ER is the person who tends to post things with contact info, usually media links. If you can be more specific, I will try to find. (I often copy and paste stuff into word documents for future reference for myself).
It was all the contact information with e-mails to Obama staffers, to complain and put forth your requests re appointments.
That person also posted it to http://womensspace.org/phpbb2, but that’s down now.
Apparently, some Canadian doctors are writing their concern about the Gupta appointment. You may see one on the official Obama website now, if it hasn’t already been removed.
I shouldn’t have said “apparently”. That would be disingenuous of me.
E-mailed and called my Senators and Rep.
One of my Senators didn’t have “Women” as one of their topic categories, so I also suggested they include it in light of the fact that, among other things, we are only represented at 16% in Congress despite comprising 52% of the population, earn 78 cents on the dollar as compared to men for the same job, are killed as a result of domestic violence on average of every 6 hours in the United States, were subjected to outrageously sexist treatment by the media through this election cycle, and…I could go on….Just an idea for anyone else who encounters the web form for their elected official as not listing “Women” among their topics.
Sis,
I think you are talking about this post

in the share news and plans section of grassroots.
Hey! What’s the word? Has everyone contacted their elected officials and forwarded this along ot their own network? TNA has made this so easy by providing the info, the links, etc. Just curious cause this thread has received so few posts. Also curious how your elected official responded (though e-mail responses usually are very delayed, but on the phone you can sometimes get a sense from the aid who answers if the issue is getting much traction).
Some good news from the House regarding the Lily Ledbetter legislation and I think if you read the article, it highlights (among other things) that voting for women based solely on gender and nothing else can work against our interests:

Yes, positive first step. We do, however, still need the legislation to get through the Senate. Last go round, the LLL make it through the House but NOT the Senate.
ACTION RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Find out who your Rep is and how they voted on the LLL. Based on how they voted, thank them or read them the riot act.
2. Find out who your Senators are and urge them to support the bill when it comes through the Senate.
