And it’s definitely not the U.S. House of Ladies

|Pat Racimora has a nice article in No Quarter Dec. 22, 2008, about seats in our House of Lords. She cites Charles Krauthammer on the Biden seat in Delaware:
Vice President-elect Biden’s Senate seat will now be filled by Edward Kaufman, a family retainer whom no one ever heard of before yesterday. And no one will hear from after two years, at which time Kaufman will dutifully retire. He understands his responsibility: Keep the Delaware Senate seat warm for two years until Joe’s son returns from Iraq to assume his father’s mantle.
It seems that not only Obama’s senate seat is up for, er, appointment (as well as Clinton’s in NY), but that Biden’s has been quietly, um, appointed. Most of us are well aware of the appointment drama in Illinois, and the discussions surrounding the NY state appointment. However, most of us are not aware that a family retainer of the Biden’s is keeping the seat toasty for the the future-hopeful Biden son. We seem to be building family dynasties in this country, as well as political machine dynasties.
It’s not the House of Lords that I used to know, and it still has very few Ladies.

Thanks for this tread and the info. I would suggest that TNA keep a running list of media contacts who are relatively reliable as sympatico on issues. Mr. Krauthammer may be one of them. With the media such as it is, we’ll need to be able to call upon those who may be more likely to lend an ear than most. Greta van Susteren is, of course, another who comes to mind. You know, the one’s with a different genetic make-up than the likes of Maureen Dowd. (Speaking of which, when I was checking out at the market yesterday, I noticed a Vanity Fair cover that appeared suspect: red, white and blue attired woman in a one-piece bathing suit standing beauty queen style, something about Tina Fey, and a notation that said Maureen Dowd. Feeling like my blood sugar was low, I dared not open it and find out what horrors I might discover. Anyone else have a stronger constitution than I and checked it out?
The voters of NY elected Hillary (twice). Imo they deserve a replacement who will carry on HIllary’s policies and projects. So I won’t throw stones at Biden’s aide. I wish Paterson would appoint one of Hillary’s aides.
Not to keep the seat warm for Chelsea, but to give the voters the same service they chose till 2010 when they can choose again.
fsteele – Damn, you are one very interesting thinker! I really appreciated your post and so appreciate the ideas you bring to the table here on the blog. Your posts are so rich in ideas, be they those that support, encourage and cheer on the ideas of others and/or ideas that challenge and offer a fresh new perspective so worthy of consideration.
PS Just to clarify: Was Kaufman an aid to Biden? The quote refers to him as a “family retainer” so I can’t tell really who he is.
Anna- Click on Charles Krauthammer above and read the whole article. It fleshes it out some.
Thanks Thia. I couldn’t differentiate the blue type of Krauthhammer’s name from the black. Anyway, i read the entire piece but it still doesn’t answer my question. (But I am going to send Mr. Krauthammer a thank you note…not the first I’ve sent to him this year by any means!)
Anna,
The way I understand it, Kaufman is a Biden family attorney that is nobody in politics. He’s a trusted family attorney who will hold the seat until the younger Biden can take it.
