The New Agenda would like to reintroduce an important positive thing that we can all work on together.
We would like to hear about the women in this country that are helping to promote and advance other women. Who is your mentor? Who has made a difference in helping you get ahead? Who is helping to lift up women and/or girls?
Welcome to The New Agenda’s new series: Women Who Help Women. The New Agenda will feature our every day heroines — women who are conducting their lives in a way that makes this country a better place for the women and girls.
Many of our members have written to us asking about educating future generations on famous women. One way that we can help is to compile a list of modern day heroines. To start to knit together the fabric of colorful tales for our next generations. Be it Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics or Zoe Cruz, former President of Morgan Stanley – there are role models out there today that are our heroines of tomorrow.
Sadly, many women in this country have not been blessed by having their lives touched by a heroine like Mary Kay or Zoe. Rather, many women see too many examples in their daily lives of women who actively demean other women (the examples are too many to list).
The New Agenda hopes that by telling tales of our modern day heroines, that we can all learn from real life examples. It is high time that women start to work together — sisters helping sisters — to lift one another up. All stories wil be saved for our members to access under a new tab on our website.
Please send us your story to JoinTheNewAgenda@yahoo.com.

When I think of women who help other women, although famous names comes to mind, more often than not, I think of those who no one’s heard of, such as the countless women living in poverty who help and support each other, cheer each other on, share what little they have with each other, and help raise their kids as many are single parents. I think of the unseen faces and the voices not heard, the names we’ll never know, the private struggles and achievements that occur every day across America.
I also think that women who help other women often comes in the form of women who work to advocate for the rights of children, since it is in our childhood that so much is learned and established. Marion Wright Edelman has been a beacon of light in this area. Truly a shining start.
What a wonderful comment made by Anna. We understand to a large degree how professional women network, but what about the droves of women she mentions who support families? How do we reach them and give them support? They will bring bring a large proportion of our future leaders to maturation. How do we raise the consciousness of America towards the average woman who “works her heart out, day in and day out”?

That is the central part of our mission statement:
“The New Agenda will speak out for the millions of women in this great country who often have no voice.”
We also realize we need to show role models of women that help other women. These can be mentors in any walk of life. Often the biggest heroes in our country and those that we will never see. Find us examples and send us their stories.

I’m so glad TNA put this thread up again. I’ve been thinking about how important it is for us to balance being REactive with being PROactive. There’s so much sexism around us, it’s easy to get drawn into reacting, reacting, reacting, because there surely is always plenty to respond to. However, if that is all women do, then we allow ourselves to be defined by the misguided behaviors of men (which must be addressed, but not to the point of exclusion) with no time or energy left to define ourselves via the positive things we and othe women have done or are doing.
I hope to post something later about women who have been beacons for me, a blessing each and every one…
Anyone want to be a woman who helps a woman today, go on over to Pajamas Media and post a comment on the piece of mine they just published!

Thanks!
This is the link to a fantastic organization called Women at Work, based in Pasadena, California. I know of them many years ago and had thought their funding had dried up but was so happy when I did an Internet search and found they are alive and well!
