Ophelia Talks about Domestic Violence
December 7, 2008
by The New Agenda
|This week, Ophelia’s got a friend coming over.
Ophelia welcomes Bincy Jacobs, Deputy Director of Policy and Training at My Sister’s Place. My Sister’s Place is a wonderful organization based in New York which helps victims of domestic abuse and their children with shelter and caring support. My Sister’s Place also offers legal help and educational programs at local schools.
Reducing domestic abuse is a key goal of The New Agenda. Approximately one in four women in our country are victims of domestic abuse in their lifetimes. Domestic abuse impacts women of all socio economic, racial, and religious background. Domestic abuse also impacts women of all sexual orientations: 30% of LGBT couples experience domestic abuse.
In addition to domestic violence, Ophelia has a lot of fat to chew this week. There’s the Cabinet Watch, Favreau, and Geithner jettisoning Bair just to name a few.
So please join us Monday night from 10-11 p.m. EST on Chewing the Fat with Ophelia . Plan to call in and let Ophelia and her guest Bincy, know how you are feeling.

It’s domestic terrorism in my mind. Where is Homeland Security when needed most?
When will women realize that pornography feeds the beast that is violence against women? Why is it that women refuse to see that the glass ceiling really is the sexual objectivaction of women? We will never be truly equal until this pornography mentality is defeated. I am so sick of hearing that you are a prude if you oppose pornography or that is just in “bad taste” and not relavant. Who are these mostly men who make money off of sexual objectivacation of and violence against women? Why do we just put up with it? When have we heard ANY female politician recently speak out against pornography and it’s implications for women. I dare all women to get out there and find out just what pornography does to women and children, and how it is so blatently racist. Are there any women ready to take this on? I truly believe that a society that views women as the parts of their sum rather than the sum of their parts, will never offer women true equality with men.
