“Feminist” – Take it back, or Leave it back???

Nov 20, 2008 | 108 Comments

Say it loud, say it proud:  yes, sisters, the next wave of feminism is upon us.   And, you have found it right here, right now!
Now we need your input and suggestions.
How do you feel about the term “feminist?”
Tina Brown wrote Tuesday in The Daily Beast that a poll of 1,000 U.S. voters showed the following:
Only 20% of women are willing to use the word “feminist” about themselves. Only 17% of all voters said they would welcome their daughters using that label.
Tina also wrote about  our group, The New Agenda, as the new way …

Chris Matthews, Misogynist, on the Ellen de Generes Show Nov. 20

Nov 19, 2008 | 18 Comments

Matthews Gropes Ellen
We have heard that Chris Matthews, Misogynist, of MSNBC’s Hardball, will be the guest of Ellen de Generes on her show on November 20.
We hope that Ellen won’t throw Mr. Hardball a softball. We hope she will ask him about his sexism.
Here are some questions for Ellen to ask:
Why does Chris feel that he must interrupt and comment on women’s appearances?
Why is he so obsessed with Senator Clinton?
What is that tingle up his leg thing?
What is his view of journalistic ethics and media bias?
Why is it his duty …

Wednesday is “Bring a Friend” Day at THE NEW AGENDA

Nov 19, 2008 | 4 Comments

The New Agenda is 100% inclusive
Today is “Bring a Friend” Day at The New Agenda.
We are asking each of our members to tell a friend, neighbor, workmate, family member, or anyone else that you know about our organization.
You can send them to our website to see what we are about and to sign up.  Another suggestion is to do what Karen did last week:  she wrote down her hair dresser’s email address (with her permission of course) and sent it to our Join box.
Together, we will work together to build our …

Who’s Afraid of Hillary Clinton?

Nov 18, 2008 | 16 Comments

I’m disturbed by the incessant media speculation regarding Hillary Clinton’s possible appointment to the Obama Cabinet as Secretary of State. It is bringing back the worst memories of the primary campaign, the ones that have to do with absurd questions of whether Senator Clinton will suck up all the available limelight, whether President-elect Obama can control ex-President Bill Clinton (come on folks—if Obama can deal with Vladimir Putin, he can certainly deal with Bill Clinton. We elected the guy; now, let’s not sell him short!), whether Bill’s foundation or finances …

Why I am Optimistic for Women

Nov 18, 2008 | 29 Comments

The winds of change are blowing…
Say what you will about Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin; but here is the same simple truth:  our country will never be the same.
As is true throughout the history of our great country, often steps backwards or horrific events must occur to let in the light of day.  Have the women of our country been so busy living their lives that we just did not see?  See that as far as we may have come, we are still second class citizens in this great country.  If we …

Blustery Loon Talks Up The New Agenda

Nov 18, 2008 | 27 Comments

You read it here first: Rush Limbaugh admits that women are just as qualified for Obama cabinet as men.
From his show yesterday:
The nags are beginning to get restless! Just as Mark Cuban is unhappy that there aren’t any entrepreneurs on Obama’s advisory team—this is from politico.com—“Early indications that men might dominate the hierarchy of Obama administration have women’s groups worried. Even as a growing chorus of advisers reportedly pushes Hillary for Sec. State!” [He spits this out like an expletive—it sounded like Sex State].
“There’s definitely been a reaction to the …

“Bitch” is Beautiful???

Nov 18, 2008 | 13 Comments

Last night on Chewing the Fat with Ophelia, we discussed an important topic:  can be take back the word “bitch?”  Can we take away the word’s negativity and power?
Musings of a 6th grade girl:
A “bitch” is a female dog;
dogs bark;
bark grows on trees;
trees grow in a forest;
a forest is part of nature;
nature is beautiful;
SO…
“bitch” is beautiful!!!
Oh, and by the way, thanks for the compliment!

The “Bitch”, The “Ditz” and The “Turncoat”

Nov 17, 2008 | 24 Comments

Add to the roster of journalists and editors who are happy to reap the advertising and circulation benefits of woman-bashing the reputable and widely read New York Magazine.
Author Amanda Fortini seems to be unaware of her own participation in making stereotypes permanent in her article, “The ‘Bitch’ and the ‘Ditz’.” While I assume that Fortini is not responsible for the obnoxious title, it couldn’t have been too difficult for the headline writers to reach such a height of clever insight if they read the article. Actually, maybe the editors decided …

Rush Limbaugh on The New Agenda

Nov 17, 2008 | 15 Comments

Today on his radio show, apparently Rush Limbaugh called The New Agenda “nags”!!!
The transcript is here.
Amy Siskind’s response: “Does this mean that we’re not going to be BFF, Rush?”
(oh, and thanks for the great publicity!)

The U.S. is 27th in the Global Gender Gap Index

Nov 17, 2008 | 5 Comments

The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2008 puts Norway at number one among 130 countries for having the narrowest gender gap.
At 27th, the U.S. is in a better position than Canada for the first time in the three years the report has been published. Canada, 31st this year, has fallen 13 points from 18th ranking in 2007, mostly due to loss of ministerial positions in government.
Analysis of the scores by World Economic Forum:
The United States (27) gains 4 places in the rankings this year, driven by across the …
