What commercials are you watching on Hardball & Chris Matthews?

Why would I torture myself to find out the commercials for Hardball? First, people say they will write advertisers, but who are they? My goal was information to readers. Second, I wanted to get an idea what was involved in profiling the advertisers, if the project were expanded in the future.

Here is the way I collected the data: I recorded Hardball and only watched the commercials at the 5:00 show in my time zone for Nov. 19-21– 3 days worth. Note that Hardball is also shown at 3:00 and 10:00 p.m. I briefly watched one 10:00 show, and the commercials are different at the time slot.

It takes ½ hour to note the sponsors, with additional write-up time. These all appear to be national sponsors. My media market is #44 on the Nielsen list of markets, about in the middle. It remains to be seen whether large markets like NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, and L.A. have the same national sponsors in their 5:00 time slots.

There are 28-32 commercials every hour. Here they are aggregated, alphabetized with annotations, web addresses or phones, if they appeared on the screen. One knows which products to buy or avoid, if so desired, or what advertiser to write.

LIST ALPHABETIZED — 3 days worth + annotations, and number of times (e.g. “2x”) the product was shown over the 3 days of that show.

“Why do you advertise on the Chris Matthews show when he consistently displays a condescending, sexist attitude towards women? You really need to have one of your PR staff watch his show a few times or review some of his shows and research a bit on the objections being voiced over his attitude towards women. I do need a new razor but I sure the he** am not going to buy a Braun (Prot.Gamb) product because you are showing callous disregard for 52% of our population by supporting the Chris Matthews show. You would be well advised to remember that women shave their legs and under their arms and the word is slowly spreading how on national tv this guy treats women as objects. Women are no longer going to tolerate this and more and more men agree with them. Wake up!”

I do not watch Chris Matthews or MSNBC at all for that matter. I am extremely displeased with their attitude and disrespect towards women. If I could delete MSNBC off of my cable box, I would do so in a heartbeat.

I agree with goesh who commented, “You really need to have one of your PR staff watch his show a few times or review some of his shows and research a bit on the objections being voiced over his attitude towards women.”

If an advertiser wants women to purchase their products, they should be knowledgeable about the types of programs they advertise on; and be forewarned as to the consequences of advertising on such programs as Chris Matthews.

In any event, I thank you for the list, I will post it on my blog and inform women everywhere that they should take a second look at the products they use and why.

Thank you for doing this. I will spend my evenings emailing these companies. This is a wonderful way to have our voices heard. Attack where it counts – $$$$.

Thanks for taking the time to make the list. I will send e-mails.

How can we best distribute this information so that our boycott can have the most impact? Maybe spread the word to other pro-hillary sites, puma sites, and pro sarah palin sites?

I’m absolutely NOT a marketing person so take this with a grain of salt, but going down the list, it seems that many of the specific products are targeted towards the male audience. Am I the only one? Hummers, Flomax, Cialis, Viagra, Braun razors, Joseph A. Banks, perfect push up. Is this coincidental, valid to “categorize”, and how? Would it be more strategic to target those that advertise more? Great analysis….if it would be helpful to do something similar in a different market, I would be willing, but not sure if there would be value added.

Those who use celebrity endorsements may also contact their agents (Ashton, McEnroe, Pat Boone). If celebrities think they are alienating their audiences, their agents will pay attention.

One way to get this message out is link it to the http://www.pumapac.org site. I forgot my login password or I would do it for you. Also don’t forget MSNBC is owned by GE, General Electric.

I look forward to writing many letters over the next week.

Just an added note: When I was at the DNC May 31st meeting protesting outside, I met a very interesting individual who had worked on several DNC campaigns. He told me that the media loved Obama because Obama attracted a young crowd that still needed many material things and, therefore, attracted advertisers. Apparently, the more the media mentioned Obama, the more the 15-30 age group watched, the more ads they sold.

This is TERRIFIC! Great idea – and thank you your time and efforts in compiling this list. Can’t wait to send some emails!

Someone else mentioned “honoring” those shows (and their sponsors) that are pro-woman. I also think this is an excellent idea. The shows that I can stomach on TV anymore are few and far between. Seems like “bitch” is the most popular word on TV these days.
But I’ve seen a show called “Bones” a couple of times and noticed that all of the “bosses” on the show are women and the main character is a woman. Didn’t hear the word “bitch” once. I’m going to keep watching in the hopes that it will consistently portray women in a postitive light. But it made me think that we should
support the shows that are pro-woman- there are so few of them.

    Three questions:

Do these advertisers also support programs that treat women with respect – sayy, Oprah, or news programs or sports programs (including Olympic women’s events) or soap operas – or do they support only Chris Matthews?

If the former, how can one single out their support of Chris Mathews as the basis of a boycott while ignoring their support of women-friendly programming as well?

If the latter how does the First Amendment play into these advertisers’ and Chris Matthews’ free speech rights?

For better or worse the First Amendment gives Matthews the right to make an ass of himself – and for companies to pay to keep the lights on in the studio so people can watch him do it. You don’t have to watch his show and then you won’t be subjected to him or to his commercial spoinsors. But journalists who depend on the First Amendment for their livlihoods will close ranks around him if they think his rights are being violated. And they control the megaphone.

  • The Stiletto said:

Chris Matthews may run for the U.S. Senate in 2010. The voters can decide to shut him up at the ballot box without that pesky First Amendment protecting even unpopular speech getting in the way:
