Your Voice Will Be Heard

When we started The New Agenda on August 11, 2008, our primary goal was this:
To give a voice to the millions of women in our country that often have none.
The New Agenda is YOUR organization.
We want to hear from as we move beyond the election. Please join us on Monday night from 10-11 p.m. EST on our weekly radio show, “Chewing the Fat with Ophelia”, as we chart our course forward together.
We want to hear what you have to say. What are your concerns, issues and dreams. What goals should The New Agenda focus on? Fair pay? Reducing domestic violence? Parity in government? Media bias?
This is YOUR group and we want to hear from you!
Please join us tomorrow night to chew some fat – oh, and we always have a fun time letting our hair down together.

My dream for this organization is an unified, nonpartisan, pro-woman voice that speaks out AGAINST sexism (especially institutionalized sexism, and most especially the media) and FOR full participation of women in power, especially in our government but other institutions as well. I’m a little wary of this particular organization taking strong stands on specific congressional legislation for fear that partisan differences among ourselves in our philosophies about the role of government (i.e. the means) might undermine our sense of unity on the overall goals of empowerment of women and shared sisterhood around calling out sexism (i.e. the ends), if that makes sense. Just an opinion.
Maybe we could have a meeting where all of the different ideologies could be represented and we could hammer out some goals and positions we could all get behind. Many of the issues that have seperated us over the years have compromised ways to address them that would allow us to really get something done. That is one of the problems we have had in the past, we have gotten so entrenched in our positions that we aren’t talking anymore. Ten or so women in a room for a weekend could come up with a lot for us to chew on. It is a lot harder to judge or dismiss someone else’s opinion when you are face to face. It may sound silly but something like a mediation? Talking about our differences in a respectful mature way should reveal many commonalities and compromises that women from all walks of life would support. I think it would also make it easier for those people to then “sell” the compromises to their like minded friends. Hey that sounds sort of like our government is supposed to work?
Cynthia,
I think you are on to something. I think we need to plan a day, once a month, to have our members have coffee or whatever format to discuss what we should be working on. We can have a team leader in many cities and he or she can take notes and write to us about the results. That way, we can ensure that The New Agenda stays the course that our members would like us to stay.
