Israel 2 – United States 0

|Just a week after Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni won a leadership race to replace Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, all indications are that the ruling Kadima party is on the way to cobbling together a new ruling coalition.
This would make Livni the second woman prime minister in the State of Israel – a country that recently celebrated its 60th birthday.
Livni is a mother of two: although I don’t recall hearing the Israeli’s question if she could balance her children and work? Prior to her career in politics, she served as a lieutenant in the Israel Defense Forces, worked for the Mossad for nearly two years, and studied law. (*)
Israel’s first woman prime minister was Golda Meir, who served as Prime Minister from 1969-1974. During that time, Golda led Israel through major challenges including the Munich Olympics kidnappings and the Yom Kippur War.
Never cowed by those who challenged her ability to lead, Golda has famously stated, “It’s no accident many accuse me of conducting public affairs with my heart instead of my head. Well, what if I do? Those who don’t know how to weep with their whole heart don’t know how to laugh either.”

Good post! Ever the practical ones, those Israelis have managed to survive several invasions, surrounded and outnumbered as they are – must be something about the intelligence and capability women have that Israel appreciates, eh? The best we can come up with is a Governor, former mayor with a bachelors degree, 5 kids, attractive, a part Native husband who actually works who might get to play 2cd fiddle to a man. I bet Livni has never shot at a moose though! Nyah!
Yeah.. gosh, how darn awful to possibly be stuck with a GOVERNOR as a VP… especially considering that many think the best we can do is the hasn’t finished his first term Senator, the former part-time State Senator and community organizer.
I’m quite certain though that Obama has never been through a war or dealt with terrorists.
Israel is a great country with a strong health care system and strong educational systems. While women in Israel have equal rights and have served as PM, the equality between men and women pretty much exists only in the secular segment of society. i would love to see that changed.
